GPR Concrete Scanning in Riverside, CA

Ground Penetrating Radar locates rebar, post-tension cables, conduit, and voids inside concrete before any cutting or drilling starts — so the crew knows what's there before the blade hits.

What We Do

GPR scanning sends radar pulses through a concrete slab or wall and reads the reflected signals to produce a real-time image of what's embedded inside. The operator marks the surface with the locations of rebar, post-tension cables, conduit, electrical, plumbing, and voids before any cutting or drilling begins.

Hitting a post-tension cable during a core drill or flat saw cut is a serious structural event — it can injure crew, damage equipment, and create significant liability. GPR scanning before the job eliminates that risk and gives the GC and owner confidence that the scope was executed safely. DSI can mobilize a GPR scan prior to any cutting scope or as a standalone service.

When You Need GPR Scanning

Scan before you cut or core any time the drawings don't confirm what's inside the concrete. That is almost always the case in post-tensioned slabs, older buildings with incomplete as-builts, slabs with embedded conduit or radiant lines, and anywhere a cut through a cable, conduit or pipe would be a safety, schedule or liability problem.

GPR is also used on its own to map rebar layout and spacing, measure cover and slab thickness, and look for voids before repairs.

How DSI Handles GPR Scanning

  1. Define the scan areas around planned cuts, cores or anchors with the GC and lead trade.
  2. Scan the surface in a grid with ground penetrating radar.
  3. Mark rebar, post-tension cables, conduit and other targets directly on the surface, with approximate depths.
  4. Walk the results with the GC or trade and adjust cut and core locations as needed.
  5. Hand off to DSI's saw and drill crews on the same mobilization when we are doing the cutting too.

What Affects the Cost of GPR Scanning

Every job is quoted from its actual scope, fixed-price or hourly. The main factors are:

  • Number and size of scan areas
  • Whether locations are spread across a building or grouped together
  • Access and working height (slabs, walls, overhead decks)
  • Whether the scan is standalone or combined with DSI cutting and coring
  • Schedule and after-hours requirements

Safety & Compliance

GPR is non-destructive and uses no ionizing radiation, so other trades can keep working nearby while we scan.

Like any scanning method it has limits: very dense reinforcement, some conductive materials and wet concrete can reduce depth and clarity. We tell you what we can and cannot see so cutting decisions are made on accurate information.

GPR Scanning Across California

DSI provides GPR scanning from our Riverside yard across the Inland Empire, including Corona, Ontario, San Bernardino, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Moreno Valley, Temecula, Jurupa Valley, and we mobilize for projects in Southern California, the High Desert, Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, the Central Valley, Northern California. Common Questions
When do I need GPR scanning?
Any time you're cutting or drilling into a slab or wall where post-tension cables, active conduit, plumbing, or structural rebar locations aren't confirmed from drawings. If you don't know what's in the concrete, scan before you cut.
Can GPR detect post-tension cables?
Yes. Post-tension cables are one of the primary reasons GPR scanning is used before concrete cutting. Cutting a PT cable is a structural event — GPR locates them so cuts are planned around them.
What does GPR scanning show?
Rebar layout and depth, post-tension cables, conduit and electrical, plumbing lines, and voids or delamination within the slab. Results are marked directly on the surface at the scan location.
Can you scan the same day as the cutting scope?
Yes. DSI can schedule scanning and cutting on the same mobilization or on back-to-back days. Confirm timing when you call so the scan crew and saw crew coordinate correctly.
How much does GPR concrete scanning cost?
It depends on the number and size of scan areas, access and whether it is combined with cutting or coring. Combining scanning with DSI's cutting crews on one mobilization is usually the most cost-effective option.
How deep can GPR see into concrete?
GPR typically reads the reinforcement and embedded items within a normal structural slab or wall. Depth and clarity depend on the concrete and how dense the rebar is, and we will tell you if a location can't be cleared confidently.
Is GPR the same as an X-ray of concrete?
No. Concrete X-ray uses radiation and needs access to both sides with a clearance zone. GPR works from one side, uses no radiation and lets other trades keep working.
